Hayes currently leads with 50.37 percent, or 126,893 votes, compared to Logan's 49.63 percent, or 125,052 votes, with more than 95 percent of votes counted, according to The New York Times as of Wednesday afternoon.

Hayes, the first African-American woman to represent Connecticut in Congress, is running for a third term to represent Connecticut's 5th District, which contains much of the northwestern part of the state in Litchfield and Hartford counties as well as parts of Fairfield and New Haven counties.

Her challenger, former state Sen. George Logan, is hoping to become a rare Republican Connecticut representative and gain another seat for the party in Congress.

The race is garnering national attention, as Democrats hope to keep their majority in the House.

"We're closely monitoring the vote count, but given the results reported by the Secretary of State we're confident that after all the votes are counted we believe George Logan will be the next Congressman from Connecticut's 5th Congressional District," Logan's Senior Advisor, Liz Kurantowicz, said in a statement on Wednesday, Nov. 9 at around 12:30 p.m.
